Cheesy, crisp, and easy to share. These breaded baked mozzarella sticks work for movie night, game night or a quick snack spread. The key is to freeze the coated cheese before baking, so the crust has time to set before the center leaks. This version gives you two easy dipping sauces and a fresh alcohol-free drink match.

Recipe at a glance

  • Yield: 16 small sticks, about 4 snack portions
  • Hands-on preparation: approximately 20–25 minutes
  • Freezer time: at least 60 minutes; longer may work better
  • Oven: 450°F (232°C) for about 7–10 minutes after preheating
  • Difficulty: approachable, but breading and freezing require patience
  • Equipment: three shallow bowls, baking tray, parchment, freezer, oven

Ingredients

  • 8 individually wrapped low-moisture mozzarella string-cheese sticks, cut in half crosswise
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten in a shallow bowl
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Oil spray or a very light olive-oil drizzle

Step-by-step: build a coating that holds

  1. Prepare three bowls: flour in the first, beaten eggs in the second, and panko mixed with Italian seasoning and garlic powder in the third.
  2. Pat each mozzarella half dry. Roll it in flour, dip in egg and coat generously with crumbs, including the cut ends.
  3. For a sturdier shell, repeat the egg and crumb steps once more. Do not leave holes where melted cheese could escape.
  4. Place the breaded pieces on a parchment-lined tray in a single layer. Freeze for at least 60 minutes until firm; do not skip this step.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Transfer the chilled sticks to a clean lined tray, leaving space between them. Mist the crust lightly with oil.
  6. Bake approximately 7–10 minutes, watching closely near the end. Remove when the coating looks golden and before major cheese leakage. The exact time depends on stick diameter and oven behavior.
  7. Let cool briefly before dipping; the filling will be very hot.

TWO EASY DIPS

MARINARA + GARLIC YOGURT

Two dips, no special ingredients

Classic warm marinara

Warm ½ cup prepared marinara according to the jar or package instructions, then serve in a small bowl. A tangy tomato sauce is a familiar contrast to creamy mozzarella. Keep the sauce separate so the coating stays crisp.

Five-minute garlic yogurt dip

Mix ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt with ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and a pinch of parsley. Taste before adding salt. Refrigerate the dip until serving. Use a suitable nondairy yogurt if you avoid milk products.

What should you drink with mozzarella sticks?

Start with sparkling lemon water. Pour ¾ cup chilled sparkling water over ice and add a lemon wedge. Its brightness can make rich cheese feel less heavy. Unsweetened iced tea is another convenient alcohol-free option. Neither pairing requires alcohol.

Why do mozzarella sticks leak?

  • Too little freezing: the cheese melts before the crumb shell has browned.
  • Open coating: exposed cut ends give cheese an easy path out.
  • Too long in the oven: continue watching once browning begins.
  • Overcrowded tray: space sticks apart for more even browning.
  • Very wet cheese: a quick pat-dry can help crumbs adhere.

Can I prepare them the day before?

Yes, you can bread the sticks and keep them frozen for later cooking in an appropriate covered freezer-safe container. Bake from frozen rather than thawing on the counter. Follow good hygiene when working with eggs and flour.

Food safety and allergies

The uncooked flour and egg coating must not be tasted. The FDA advises against tasting raw flour, dough or batter. These sticks contain milk, wheat and egg. Refrigerate perishable dips promptly and follow standard leftover storage guidance. Keep hot cheese away from children until cool enough to eat.
