How to make garlic butter mushrooms

  1. Clean the mushrooms, trim dry stem ends if necessary, and pat the mushrooms dry. Halve large mushrooms so pieces are roughly similar in size.
  2. Set a large skillet over medium-high heat and warm the olive oil. Add the mushrooms in a layer; avoid overcrowding so they brown rather than simply steam.
  3. Cook about 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mushrooms will release moisture first, then start to brown as the moisture evaporates. Lower heat if edges scorch.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in butter and minced garlic and cook another 1–2 minutes, until the garlic is fragrant without darkening or burning.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice, add parsley if desired, and taste before adding salt. Serve warm in a shallow bowl with small forks or toothpicks.

Two easy drinks to pair

1. Lemon iced tea

Pour chilled unsweetened iced tea over ice with a squeeze of lemon. Its light acidity makes a refreshing contrast to buttery mushrooms. Choose decaf tea if caffeine is a concern.

2. Rosemary citrus sparkling water

In a tall glass add ice, ¾ cup sparkling water, a squeeze of lemon, and a washed small rosemary sprig for aroma. Remove the sprig before drinking if preferred. No alcohol is needed for this pairing.

Optional adult beverage

For adults of legal drinking age who choose to drink, a mild lager is an optional flavor companion. Alcohol is not necessary and no alcohol sales or purchase links are provided.

Make it work the first time

  • Do not crowd the pan: use a second batch if needed.
  • Keep garlic for late in the process: minced garlic cooks quickly and can turn bitter if burned.
  • Use a hot pan: moisture needs to evaporate before the mushrooms can brown.
  • Finish with lemon off heat: start small so the dish is bright rather than sour.
  • Serve soon: a hot skillet snack loses its best texture if held for too long.

More ways to serve

  • Use the cooked mushrooms as a small plate alongside toasted baguette slices.
  • Add a pinch of chili flakes for gentle heat.
  • Spoon a modest serving over warm plain toast to make a more filling appetizer.
  • For a dairy-free version, use additional olive oil in place of butter and check any accompanying ingredients.

Cost and food safety

The price varies with mushroom type, package size and store. Estimate by portion used instead of claiming an unverified fixed cost. Clean food-preparation surfaces, refrigerate fresh produce appropriately, and refrigerate leftovers promptly. People with allergies or ingredient sensitivities should review every component.
